About Ultrasonic Inspection

Ultrasonic inspection uses high frequency sound waves for detection of flaws, imperfections or changes in properties within materials. The thickness of the sample, the depth and type of flaw can be ascertained using this method. It has become a widely used test method in NDT due to its reliability and accurate measurements. Progresses in the instrument technology has developed advanced ultrasonic techniques such as Phased Array & Time of Flight Diffraction providing even greater imaging.

Phased ARRAY - AN ADVANCE ULTRASONIC INSPECTION METHOD

With a variety of UT equipment and a range of different samples, TCS NDT can get you ready for what you can expect out in the field.
Training with us is made easy; broken down into the right balance of practical and theory.

Entry level into Ultrasonic Inspection begins with UT Thickness.

40 Hours Course

What this course covers:
Basic Ultrasonic Unit Setup
Calibration and Checks
Probe Types and Construction
Wavelength, Sensitivity and Resolution
Beam Propagation, Acoustic Impedance and Attenuation
Snell’s Laws and Wave Modes
DAC Curves and Evaluation
Defect detection and Reporting
Plus more.

Ultrasonic Testing Level II, Welds 3.1 & 3.2 (Plate & Pipe)
80 Hours Course, must hold UT Thickness

What this course covers:
Weld Geometry, Inspection and Drawing

The above two courses can be combined into one block: Ultrasonic Testing Thickness & Welds 3.1 & 3.2
120 Hours Course

Ultrasonic Testing Recommended Course Prerequisites

  • Basic Literacy Skills
  • Basic Language Skills
  • Intermediate Maths Skills (Algebra and Trigonometry)
  • Product Technology and Processes

While not essential, as the course notes do cover all required areas, reading some of the below literature might help provide additional knowledge, and are generally available in reference libraries:

  • 'Ultrasonic Flaw Detection for technicians' by J C Drury. Obtainable from the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing
  • Procedures and 'Recommendations for Ultrasonic Testing of Butt Welds' 2nd edition. The Welding Institute

See our knowledge section to try examples of the typical question and problems that you will encounter during the course.
